New 2nd generation eneloop formula available at DepotEco.com and our Amazon store Ecobatteries.net

How can you check which eneloop is a “1st Generation” or ” 2nd Generation” ?
All original SANYO battery packages containing the “2nd Gen” eneloop have the information “Up to 1500 times” on the front. Also you can differentiate the two generations by checking the model name which is written on each eneloop. The “1st Gen” cells have written HR-3UTG (AA) and HR-4UTG (AAA) on them, the “2nd Gen” eneloop HR-3UTGA (AA) and HR-4UTGA (AAA). Additionally the new models have a crown on them.

Whats new with the new 2nd gen eneloop?
Charge Once and Use Years Later – eneloop batteries offer exceptional shelf life so you can use your rechargeable batteries when and where you need them most. You can charge your eneloop batteries once, store them away for up to three years and use them at a moment’s notice. After charging eneloop batteries they will maintain 75% of their capacity for up to three years. They are ready to be used immediately right out of the pack.
Clean Energy – Great for the Environment – Each year, Americans deposit 8 billion disposable batteries into landfills! eneloop batteries can be recharged up to1,500 times, which means that the purchase and use of a single eneloop cell can keep many hundreds of batteries from entering landfills! eneloop battery cells are completely recyclable which reduces the impact on the environment. They can be recycled free of charge at any of the 50,000+ Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) recycling centers near you.
What is the difference between the “old” and the “new” improved eneloop?
SANYO’s advanced rechargeable battery technology allowing them to last longer than ever before! They provide excellent performance-to-cost advantages over both conventional alkaline and other rechargeable batteries. Unlike disposable batteries which can only be used only once and are wasteful to the environment, the new eneloop batteries can be recharged up to 1,500 times. They comepre-charged and can be used immediately out of the pack. eneloop batteries deliver reliable battery performance when you need it the most!
- An extra of 500 charging cycles – instead of being rechargeable 1000 times, the new eneloop is even rechargeable up to 1500 times.
- Improved self-discharge. Even though the self discharge of the old eneloop was already very impressive, you can store the new eneloop for 3 years and still it will retain 75% of its capacity.
- You need a battery, which is reliable even when having cold temperatures? Before eneloop was suitable for temperatures as low as -10°C – now even until -20°C.
- The new eneloop is even more environment-friendly as it is pre-charged with solar energy in Japan.

The specifications of eneloop will remain as they are. Both types are having a nominal voltage of 1,2 V. The Mignon-eneloop (AA) has a rating capacity of 2000 mAh, the Micro-eneloop (AAA) does have a rating capacity of 800 mAh.
Rechargeable up to 1500 times.
Incorporating new technologies for material, manufacturing method and structure developed through the knowledge gained since the first release of eneloop the number of times a battery can be recharged has been increased by the factor 1.5 to approximately 1,500 times compared to the conventional models. With the ability to recharge the battery more times, the new “eneloop” is both more economically competitive and enhanced in environmental awareness as it means the amount of overall battery waste will be reduced.
Ready to use even after 3 years of storage.
Rechargeable batteries typically have a self-discharge characteristic which gradually reduces charged energy over time. This is considered the downside of typical rechargeable batteries. It renders them inconvenient since they can not be used immediately after being purchased, requiring the batteries to be charged to start using them and recharged if they have been left on the shelf for a period of time. Since eneloop batteries have a low self-discharge rate, they are pre-charged and usable immediately after purchase like dry cell batteries. The new eneloop battery continues this tradition by using SANYO’s original “super-lattice alloy” for negative electrode material and improvement of materials and structure, a fully-charged “new eneloop” battery can maintain approximately 75% of charged power even after 3 years, ensuring that power is available when needed.

eneloop – ready to use rechargeable batteries
Since its launch in November 2005 eneloop has become well-known around the world as it has revolutionized the consumer-use rechargeable battery segment with its unique features:
- rechargeable approximately 1,500 times
- coming pre-charged, making it usable immediately after purchase
- its unique design departing from the look of traditional batteries

Panasonic is planning to take 100 percent ownership of its subsidiaries Sanyo Electric and Panasonic Electric Works in a move costing up to $9.4 billion to strengthen green businesses such as electric cars and solar panels. (AP Photo/Shuji Kajiyama)
Panasonic is planning to take 100 percent ownership of its subsidiaries Sanyo Electric and Panasonic Electric Works in a move costing up to $9.4 billion to strengthen green businesses such as electric cars and solar panels.
Japan’s biggest consumer electronics maker said in a statement Thursday it will buy shares in the two companies through a public tender offer, aiming for a complete purchase by April 2011. Shares in the target companies soared while Panasonic tumbled.
Panasonic Corp. already owns 51 percent of Panasonic Electric Works Co., which has lighting, electric and housing operations, and owns 50.05 percent of Sanyo Electric Co., a money-losing unit with strong battery and solar panel businesses that Panasonic took over in December.
Panasonic, which makes Viera TVs and Lumix digital cameras, plans to spend up to 818.4 billion yen ($9.4 billion) on buying out the two companies. It said it has cash and can borrow to finance the purchases but is also considering a share issue of up to 500 billion yen ($5.7 billion).
The move underlines the strategy of Panasonic President Fumio Ohtsubo who has repeatedly said that ecological businesses, including batteries for electric vehicles and solar panels for green homes, will be the backbone of the electronics maker.
Osaka-based Panasonic will offer 1,110 yen per share for Panasonic Electric and 138 yen per share for Sanyo in a tender starting Aug. 23 through Oct. 6. Panasonic will also carry out stock swaps to complete the buyout, if needed, it said.
Separately, the company’s earnings report Thursday showed it recovering from the slump it suffered after the global financial crisis.
April-June profit totaled 43.7 billion yen ($502 million), a reversal from a 53 billion yen loss a year earlier.
Quarterly revenue surged 35 percent to 2.161 trillion yen ($24.8 billion) as sales grew across the board for a wide range of products such as flat-panel TVs, Blu-ray recorders, air conditioners, rechargeable batteries, semiconductors and solar panels.
Still, Panasonic is facing touch competition not only from local rivals like Sony Corp. but also Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea in other areas of consumer electronics such as flat TVs.
“To survive the competition and to foster growth in new markets, it is essential to foster quick strategic decision-making and the strength of the company,” the company said.
While Panasonic is hoping to shape its growth strategy around what it calls “green innovation,” it is also counting on growth in consumer electronics, showing a 3D camcorder for regular consumers Wednesday.
The company raised its forecasts for the full year through March 2011 to an 85 billion yen ($977 million) profit on 8.9 trillion yen ($102 billion) sales. It had previously expected 50 billion yen ($575 million) in profit on 8.8 trillion yen ($101 billion) sales.
That would be Panasonic’s first profit after two straight years of red ink.
Panasonic’s acquisition of Sanyo for $4.6 billion last year formed one of the world’s largest electronics makers.
New kind of batteries called lithium-ion _ in which Sanyo is among the top makers in the world _ are now mostly used in gadgets like laptops and cell phones. But they are expected to become key in electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
Production in bigger numbers as a result of the Sanyo-Panasonic tie-up can lead to cost cuts, critical for the proliferation of the fledgling, still costly, battery technology for cars.
Panasonic also has a joint venture with Toyota Motor Corp. to produce batteries for hybrids and electric vehicles. Sanyo, which already does business with Honda Motor Co., Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Co., is likely to be expanding partnerships with other automakers.
Sanyo Electric shares shot up 27 percent in Tokyo trading to 149 yen after Japanese business daily The Nikkei reported on Panasonic’s plans ahead of its announcement. Panasonic Electric jumped 15 percent to 1,124 yen but Panasonic Corp. sank 7.7 percent to 1,077 yen.

OSAKA (Kyodo) Panasonic Corp. has successfully completed its tender offer for Sanyo Electric Co. shares, paving the way for turning its smaller rival into a subsidiary this month, sources said Wednesday.
The deal should result in creation of one of the world’s largest consumer electronics conglomerates.
By making Sanyo its subsidiary, Panasonic is expected to begin full-scale cooperation with the company on rechargeable batteries and energy operations.
At the same time, reorganizing overlapping operations, including the manufacture and sale of appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and audiovisual equipment, will likely be among the key issues to be resolved, the sources said.
The tender offer was concluded following an application for a majority of Sanyo’s outstanding shares, they said, adding that the result was to be formally announced Thursday.
Panasonic is set to announce early next year a new business policy for a three-year period beginning in April in which the company is expected to state that expanding energy business will form the core of its operations, they said.
Panasonic sees solar batteries and lithium ion batteries as products that will produce a synergy effect. Under their partnership, Sanyo is expected to utilize its technology to produce solar batteries while Panasonic will handle sales.
With the rechargeable lithium ion battery business for cars likely to expand, the two companies intend to heighten their global competitiveness by blending their respective technologies, the sources said.
To ensure a smooth partnership, Panasonic will send several of its executives to Sanyo. Both companies have agreed to maintain the Sanyo brand for the time being, but Panasonic is highly likely to seek to streamline operations including reducing the number of Sanyo personnel, the sources also said.
Panasonic announced the plan to make Sanyo a subsidiary in November 2008, saying the tender offer would take place last spring. The delay in achieving the goal was mainly due to difficulties in clearing antitrust laws in countries where Panasonic and Sanyo operate.

Rayovac’s new 1-hour NiMH charger answers consumer demand for speed and convenience! The Rayovac battery charger is the only on the market that charges today’s high-capacity, longer-lasting Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries in just 1 hour. It charges a combination of up to eight AA or AAA NiMH batteries and four C or D type batteries. The accessory kit with DC adaptor allows “on-the-go” charging. It is ideal for taking along on family vacations or for those mobile professionals that use battery-operated, high-drain devices such as digital cameras in their jobs. “Smart charger” technology individually charges each to the maximum capacity, so partially drained batteries take less than 1 hour. It also charges Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries. Charge times: 8 AA – 14 hours; 8 AAA – 4 hours; 4C or 4D – 7 hours; 1 9V – 12 hours

eneloop rechargeable batteries currently do not come as a C or D cell, yet. (read this for info)

They do offer the adapter shells. Some people have great success with these others report back that they seem not to work at all.
Tips, for using the eneloop D and C shells.
1. Make sure the AA battery is completely inserted into the Spacer / Adapter. The Small tip of the eneloop (positive) needs to touch the extremely small ring of metal on the inside of the tip of the adapter.
2. In many case the AA eneloop battery bottom (negative) side is to small to touch the negative contact terminal in the flashlight or other devices .
Solution, Tape a washer or a penny to the eneloops negative side/ bottom of the adapter terminal after inserting the AA battery. This should then provide sufficient contact area for the device.
One of our customers recently sent this in to us. ( Thanks for the feedback !! )
“This may be a new one for you. I knew that I had pushed the AA battery completely into the D cell adapter because it clicked into place. I even pushed the two D cells together inside the flashlight housing to make sure they made contact. This is in a Maglight 2 D-cell flashlight.
Well, as I looked at the two parts of the flashlight I noticed the butt end with the wire coil that presses against the batteries was larger than the AA battery butt end in the adapter. Ah HA! I put a balled up piece of foil over the AA battery end and screwed the butt end of the flashlight on and, voila’! It works! So, it was simply the coiled end of the flashlight was larger than the AA battery so no contact was made. Please add this to your support notes for other Eneloop users who may run into the same issue.
BTW, I’m still very happy with this kit. If a bit of foil is all it takes to reduce my dependence on disposable batteries then that’s fine! I can reuse the same bit of foil over and over and over and over and…….”
We love to hear that about eneloops.. and yes they are worth any extra effort.

| The FINANCIAL — SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (SANYO) will exhibit eneloop rechargeable batteries at the booth of musical instrument manufacturer, Korg Inc. (Korg), during Musikmesse 2009 in Frankfurt, Germany.
The eneloop battery uses the world’s leading recharging technologies and promotes a lifestyle that values reusing and recycling.
Korg, a leader in the electronic musical instrument industry, will use the Musikmesse to further promote its best selling pocket-sized synthesizer, KAOSSILATOR, which operates using four AA batteries. Started over 25 years ago, Musikmesse is the world’s largest music trade show, and showcases instruments, sheet music, as well as music software and hardware from around the world, all under one roof.
Korg is also committed to addressing global environmental issues. At the Musical Instruments Fair held in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, in October 2008, the two companies held a joint event, where Korg equipped its KAOSSILATOR with eneloop batteries. Since then, Korg has in partnership with SANYO to investigate the technical performance of the eneloop battery as part of its desire to promote replacement of dry-cell batteries with rechargeable batteries in musical instruments. The investigation revealed that the stable voltage and resistance to cold temperatures provided by eneloop help to maintain sound quality. Eneloop combines outstanding environmental performance and superior compatibility with electronic instruments.
SANYO is working with Korg to offer musicians lifestyles with greater performance and environmental value, comfort, and enjoyment.

If you have visited Japan recently then you will know how popular electric bikes are over there. They are so popular in fact, that Sanyo has decided to install recharging locations for government civil servants to park and charge in the area of Tokushima Prefecture.
Sanyo chose this location as it is near a Sanyo battery manufacturing plant. Three of them will be constructed allowing bikers to pull in, plug in, and go about their normal daily activities before returning to a fully-charged bike. The stations will not cost anything to use and are fully automated requiring no on-location staff.
The parking stations have a roof covered with three solar panels of 210 watts each that help capture the energy required to charge the bikes. As a backup there is also an electricity supply in case there isn’t enough solar energy to recharge all the bikes connected to the station.
Local civil servants can expect to start using the stations in March.

Matthew’s Opinion
If there was better provision for cycling on our roads then I would consider using a bike. An electric bike would be even better allowing you to travel faster and with more weight. I think Holland leads the way with a culture of using bikes instead of cars; all of their roads have cycling lanes and many locals use them, especially for travelling around areas like Amsterdam.
Offering free recharging stations is a guaranteed way to get people to continue to use these electric bikes instead of turning to cars. The stations look to be quite green as well using solar energy first and then falling back on electricity when required.
If this experiment is a success then I’m sure it will spread to other areas of Japan. Whether it remains free is another question. These stations surely cost quite a bit to setup, so Sanyo may want to charge a daily rate for their use or offer a subscription service for regular users.
