The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians and Allied Crafts of the United States, its Territories and Canada (IATSE) IA Local 442 of Santa Barbara and the Tri Counties, hereby announces a Strike against Metropolitan Theatre Corporation (MTC) at The Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara California.
In February of 2009, MTC attempted to throw away a contractual relationship with IATSE Local 442 that has spanned many decades. MTC was brought back to the negotiating table and after almost a year of negotiation, much of which the union considers to have been in bad faith, Metropolitan Theatres has given the local its “last, best, and final” offer.
This offer would result in a minimum decrease in pay of 14%. Also at issue are clauses that would allow management to hire workers at a lower rate without using the union hiring hall.
Santa Barbara IATSE Local 442 holds contracts at the Lobero Theatre, the Granada Theatre, the Santa Barbara Bowl, the Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center as well as staffing numerous other independent and corporate events in the Tri-Counties.
Our members have provided quality entertainment to the community for many years. We have literally set the stage for professional productions in which many of your children have performed.
We thank you for your patronage! It is that patronage that provides us our jobs.
Now we ask for your support! We ask that you boycott all live performances at the Arlington Theatre in support of your friends and neighbors who are trying to make a living.
We just want to feed our children, pay our taxes, and have a decent quality of life.
Our projectionists still have a contract with Metropolitan Theatres, and we will in no way impede your access to movies at the many MTC movie houses in town.
Please urge Metropolitan Theatre Corporation (MTC) to return to the table and offer us a fair deal.
Thank You,

SAN DIEGO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Named as one of the top 100 innovations this year, PowerGenix, a manufacturer of nontoxic, high performance rechargeable Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) batteries, was honored with a Popular Science Best of What’s New Award in the Gadgets category for the company’s AA rechargeable batteries. The first new rechargeable battery technology in more than 20 years, Popular Science editors singled out PowerGenix batteries for their ability to deliver power on par with disposables.
“For 22 years, Popular Science has honored the innovations that surprise and amaze us – those that make a positive impact on our world today and challenge our views of what’s possible in the future,” said Mark Jannot, Editor-in-Chief of Popular Science. “The Best of What’s New Award is the magazine’s top honor, and the 100 winners – chosen from among thousands of entrants – represent the highest level of achievement in their fields.”
“An environmentally responsible battery with no power compromise, PowerGenix batteries answer the call for a new generation of high performance rechargeable batteries,” said PowerGenix CEO Dan Squiller. “By developing a battery with no performance sag, we’ve removed the stigma of underperforming rechargeable batteries that has stunted the industry’s growth. As we ready our batteries for a major rollout to retail outlets across North America, we’re thrilled to have exceeded the rigorous criteria of Popular Science editors and honored by this validation of our technology.”
Building on the high-power-producing nickel-zinc chemistry first developed by Thomas Edison, PowerGenix developed its battery technology to solve several of the key hurdles initially hindering its commercialization. The resulting 1.6-volt batteries deliver 30 percent more power than conventional rechargeable technologies and match the 1.5-volts of disposable alkalines that most gadgets, such as digital cameras and flashlights, are designed for.
In addition to offering advanced rechargeable battery performance, PowerGenix’s NiZn batteries are also safe, non-combustible and nontoxic. Certified by independent third party testing to meet Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) standards, PowerGenix’s batteries contain no heavy metals such as lead, cadmium or mercury.
PowerGenix’s NiZn batteries are one of only five rechargeable chemistries to receive certification from the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) for collection and recycling at its more than 50,000 drop-off points in North America.
A profile of the batteries will appear in the December issue of Popular Science. Currently, the batteries are available at online retailers Amazon.com, DepotEco and GreenBatteries.com.

As you may know, our focus at DepotEco has always been to make lifestyles simpler, more practical, and less harmful to the earth. It is for this reason that we love the new USB flash drives by Pleomax / Samsung. With people storing more data than ever in digital form, the use of an external storage device has become an indispensable way to save space and memory on one’s computer, reduce wasteful paper files, and create backup files to avoid the awful moment when a spilt coffee can destroy years of build-up data.
External hard drives have continually evolved since the first cumbersome devices that sat heavily next to the computer buzzing away. They’ve decreased in size at the same time as they’ve increased in speed, durability and storage capacity. Now Pleomax by Samsung has raised the bar by creating external media storage devices of the highest quality and efficiency. Their line of USB flash drives are the best that we’ve seen and we’d like to tell you a bit about why.
These MADE IN THE USA, sleekly designed, and durable flash drives hold up to 8 GB of secured files and applications, and they are about the size of your thumb (2.5″ long by 3/4″). They can be plugged directly into any USB port drives and are certified USB 2.0 and 1.1 compatible. They are small enough to allow insertion of multiple drives into closely ganged USB ports without the need for cables.
But they’re still large enough that you won’t easily lose them between the cushions of your couch and they fit snugly and securely into the USB port. With most operating systems they are recognized immediately by your computer and are ready to go as soon as you plug them in, without any need for a driver or startup software (Windows 98 SE requires a driver download available at samsungpleomax.com). There are other USB flash drives of similar size and storage capacity, but Pleomax is ahead of the pack in terms of speed, durability, pricing, and overall quality.
Another reason that we love these USB flash drives by Pleomax is that they’re made right here in California. So not only are we encouraging a decrease in paper usage by supporting this product, but we’re also supporting cutting edge American ingenuity. However, the bottom line remains that these are simply the best flash drives out there for their size, speed, durability, storage capacity and ease of use. And you’ll not believe how inexpensive they are! Check out our current prices at DepotEco.com right now.

For Immediate Release: May 30th 2009
We at DepotEco are adding something really exciting to our inventory this summer! We have the honor of being one of the first stores to offer the newest in innovative Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) battery technology from PowerGenix.
In the past few years, interest in PowerGenix NiZn batteries has skyrocketed as their reputation for producing the most reliable, highest quality NiZn technology has grown. Today the company is supplying NiZn cells into multiple markets including power tool, lawn and garden, consumer AA, military, and light electric vehicle (LEV).
In the exciting and quickly evolving world of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), PowerGenix and their NiZn battery technology is being recognized as a game changer and real step forward in terms of efficiency, power, environmental soundness, and cost effectiveness. PowerGenix’s NiZn powered Toyota Prius was showcased at the 2009 San Diego International Auto Show where the advanced battery vehicle was featured in the Eco-Center, the main feature of the 2009 show. As the Prius, the Insight, and other new hybrid cars battle it out for the top spot, PowerGenix’s NiZn technology is finding itself at the center of HEV innovation.
PowerGenix has also entered into a supply agreement with PowerEagle, the leading manufacturer of electric bicycles in China. Under the agreement, PowerGenix will supply its NiZn cells for pack fabrication into the entire product line offered by Veloteq, PowerEagle’s North American sales and distribution partner, beginning in 2009. In many other arenas PowerGenix has seen a great increase in demand and investment and has accordingly begun high-volume manufacturing.
For decades NiZn batteries have been recognized for their usefulness in applications demanding high discharge rate capabilities. With a high energy-density ratio and an open circuit voltage of 1.6 volts they have been heralded as the batteries of the future for high drain applications. Now PowerGenix- an innovative San Diego based company founded in 2000- has developed and is manufacturing patented NiZn 1.6 Volt Rechargeable AA batteries that make NiZn technology more effective, useful and available than ever before.
PowerGenix has improved already efficient NiZn technology by increasing cycle-life, lowering cost, reducing size and weight by 30% and improving low temperature discharge behavior. The small size and low internal resistance of PowerGenix NiZn 1.6 Volt Rechargeable AA Batteries enables the delivery of significantly more power during periods of peak demand than a nickel-cadmium (NiCd) or nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery of comparable size.
Another way that PowerGenix NiZn batteries have raised the bar is by their ability to completely recharge in less than two hours and achieve 80% recharge within one hour, a key benefit for cordless power tools, electronics and many other applications. These rechargeable batteries are also completely safe, non-combustible and easier on the environment than other comparable technologies.
Until now, NiZn 1.6 Volt Rechargeable AA batteries have been available only in limited quantities via one camera merchant. But we at DepotEco were so impressed by the efficiency and environmental soundness of these batteries that we were determined to make them available to our customers. We are honored to announce that beginning in late June we will be one of the first stores to carry these amazing batteries. They are now available online and in our brick and mortar store.
